“Brothers and sisters: Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another”(Coll 3:12ff) “But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back” (Luke 6:27ff) Both readings today hold up an idealism that seems WAY, WAY beyond our abilities. Here Jesus is tell us that this humility is the basic dynamic of Life, this humility is His understanding of God, and this humility is the essence of his life. As He sees it, the Plan of God will come to pass only if humans learn to be vulnerable, to give way, to be non-resistant. That, he tells us, is the key. But do we have enough confidence in grace to try our hand at it?
