Many bee populations are collapsing, and while the economic losses are obvious to the bee keeper, the implications could be much larger. Honey bees and their wild cousins play a key role in the pollination of many crops making them crucial to our food production system. The decline in the honey bee population has been linked to seed treatments called neonicitinoids which are chemicals commonly used on commercial crops and are sold under the brand name of Cruiser or Poncho. These chemicals have been temporarily banned in Europe and there is significant pressure to ban them in North America as well.
