Mileas deputy, General Victor Stanculescu - who had endorsed Elena Ceauşescus order to shoot to kill in Timişoara - cannot be found. He has taken his wifes advice and is hiding in a hospital, having a cast put on a bogus broken leg. And a group of plotters based around first generation Stalinist Silviu Brucan and ex-heir-apparent Ion Iliescu is frantically bringing forward their plans for coup intended for the following spring. They break down the doors of Casa Centrala and begin to ransack the place.
