Buffalo Police Departments IT staff needs fired en masse, and the PD itself needs to be brought up on Federal charges. Thatll get some attention - and one would hope, national bulletins to all police agencies. I was amused to note that the copy machine people charge $500 to switch on security software costing them about five cents per unit, to fix this mess at the source. In the IT world, It is morally wrong to allow a sucker to keep his money. I would speculate that the unnamed forensic software available for free on the Internet was most likely Linux. One needs not employ a former NSA analyst to pull that data off a hard drive; anyone who happens to have the $40 kit to plug a hard drive into a USB port on any computer can do the whole job in under an hour.
