Buganda must stop begging I am a Muganda, descendant of Kisolo, - TopicsExpress

Buganda must stop begging I am a Muganda, descendant of Kisolo, head of the Ngonge (water otter) clan. I regard the current Buganda katikkiro as one of the most innovative and hard-working in the recent past. I supported the katikkiro in his nationwide fundraising drives for the reconstruction of the burnt Kasubi tombs – especially due to their international tourism importance. However, I believe that after the Kasubi tombs, this massive fundraising should not be extended to other stalled kingdom projects. Buganda must maintain its pole position and pride in the country – true as we sing: “Ekitiibwa kya Buganda kyavadda” – rather than being labelled as a begging kingdom. Unlike other kingdoms, Buganda is lucky to have many sources of income that can help fund developmental projects. We have major markets, landing sites, forests and large chunks of prime land that can be leased out. This begging spree, whereby the katikkiro keeps going to areas he has already visited looks bad. After Kasubi tombs, now it is Bulange plaza! Who knows? After this, it could be the Twekobe and later the enlargement of the Kabaka’s lake. Begging does not serve as a good example for Buganda subjects, especially the youth, who have always been urged to work hard and discard the begging mentality. Emily Nakiwala, eminakiwala@gmail
