Building Examples: Remaining tower of the old Royal Albert Hospital in Washbourne Close This tower is one of the last remaining pieces of the old Royal Albert Hospital which was established in 1862 in Devonport. As Plymouth grew a new hospital was built called Derriford Hospital in the 1980’s which meant that the Royal Albert was shut down and demolished, but when it was demolished parts of it were incorporated into new residential buildings and this tower was also left standing in Washbourne close. It is made of variety of stones such as limestone and redbrick as are the walls to the Naval Base and other historical building in the area as this was the main type of building material available in the area at the time. This tower is now derelict and mostly bordered up. It is threatened with demolition by the owner of the land it sits on as stated by This is Plymouth, 2011.
