Building Question Q: In an R3 ocupancy (single family residence): can a door swing into the required landing at the base of a stair as long as the door in the fully opened position does not reduce a required dimension by more than 7" ? A:You are mixing the IBC and IRC to some degree as residential construction is far more lenient with regard to door swings and obstructions to the path of travel. To answer your question, and assuming we are talking about a door that swings over a landing at the bottom of stairs, yes. A door can swing over a landing in a residence at the base of stairs without and minimum dimension for clear space. The residential code also has exceptions for where a landing is not even required. This might be helpful: R311.5.4 Landings for stairways. There shall be a floor or landing at the top and bottom of each stairway. A flight of stairs shall not have a vertical rise larger than 12 feet (3658 mm) between floor levels or landings. The width of each landing shall not be less than the width of the stairway served. Every landing shall have a minimum dimension of 36 inches (914 mm) measured in the direction of travel. Exception: A floor or landing is not required at the top of an interior flight of stairs, including stairs in an enclosed garage, provided that a door does not swing over the stairs.
