Under his guidance, the Seattle Department of Neighbourhoods grew to become a national model for planning and development across North America. Jim served under three mayors for 14 years in Seattle. His work was recognized with an Innovations Award from the Kennedy School of Government, a Full Inclusion Award from the American Association on Mental Retardation, and the Public Employee of the Year Award from the Municipal League of King County. Currently, Jim is in demand as a speaker and workshop leader, speaking most recently at the Tamarack Institute in Kitchener-Waterloo, England, New Zealand and around North America. Jim also works for the University of Washington where he teaches courses in community organizing and development and connects university resources with community initiatives. Hi is an active member of the faculty for the Asset-Based Community Development Institute. Jim’s book, Neighbor Power: Building Community the Seattle Way, chronicles how the Department of Neighborhoods has involved tens of thousands of neighbors in the development of scores of community-driven plans and 3,000 neighborhood self-help projects.
