Built from the ashes of the well-loved 90s post-hardcore band At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta took a huge leap into progressive rock. Their albums are very concept-oriented, long-winded and a little (okay, very) pretentious, but if youre a fan of progressive rock you knew that already. The band incorporates hard rock with jazz, funk, psychedelia, and weird ambient interludes. Cygnus... is their second albums opening track, a bilingual four-part mini-opus that experiments with a few non-traditional time signatures and a dreamy interlude in the middle. If you enjoy it, check out the rest of the album. Tomorrow, a maudlin, darkly funny 80s icon.
