Bulldogs Offense Struggles in 23-9 Loss to Tuskegee... In what was a tough battle in Birmingham last season turn into a man handling this year. The Tuskegee Golden Tigers scored two straight touchdowns within the first six minutes of action in route to their first Louis Crews Classic victory 23-9. A&M could not find any offense as starting quarterback Brandon Wells went 18 for 37 for 217 yards and 35 on the ground after 10 attempts. Barrington Scott rushed the ball 16 times but accumulated only 22 yards. Montaurius Smith led the receiving corps with five receptions for 59 yards, while Terrance Pride totaled five catches for 56 yards. “We had our chances but mistakes doomed us,” head coach Anthony Jones mentioned. Of the 12 drives the Bulldogs saw, the first two ended in fumbles, six ended in punts, two finished on downs while a missed field goal and the lone touchdown rounded out the Bulldogs offense in their second contest of 2013. After the quick start by the Tigers, AAMU had to regroup and put a drive together. Although they were able to produce a six and seven play drive both ended in punts. Tuskegee, on the other hand, would then score a 34 yard field goal to push the score in their favor 17-0 at halftime. AAMU did have a few bright spots in the first half as senior Derrick Harris ended one of TU’s drives with his first interception of the year. The second half started with drives by both teams ending in punts and a Maroon & White missed field goal. A&M had a chance when a Tuskegee punt was shanked and landed one yard from the line of scrimmage giving AAMU the ball on the visitor’s 29 yard line. But after seven plays they still could not add points to the scoreboard as Cesar Ramon missed his first field goal try of the year. The Anthony Jones led squad finally got on the board after a nine play 60 yard drive that saw Scott score his second TD of the season producing a score of 17-7 going into the fourth quarter. The boy’s in Maroon never gave up throwing the ball and running with authority throughout the game but the Tigers were on point looking like a team that had played multiple contests and not their first. Tuskegee would add another score when Justin Nard connected with Marque Gardner for 56 yard touchdown that sealed the deal for the Tigers first win over A&M since 2008 and first by any visiting team in the four year old Louis Crews Classic. The Tigers QB Nard went 11-18 for 206 yards and a touchdown. Rashad Burkett led TU in rushing with 33 yards on three tries. Quavon Taylor secured 12 tackles for the Maroon & Gold. The Maroon & White will regroup and now get ready to hit the road for two straight weeks of contests first in South Carolina for a date with the Bulldogs of South Carolina State on Saturday, September 14.
