Bullets Over Broadway (1994) - John Cusack is David Shayne, a writer desperate to get one of his plays recognized as a success and gets caught up in everything that goes with it. Directed by Woody Allen, Cusack is every bit the control freak neurotic, fighting to keep his artistry intact as he gets financed by a mobster who wants his squeeze as the star of that play. Then everyone is trying to shape his vision, but what really sets him off is the mobster muscle that happens to have a better idea how to write how people actually speak. Threatening to quit on three occasions, he finds solace in Helen St. Claire, his lead actress and has an affair with her, complicating his relationship with his girlfriend. Everything that happens in this movie goes to show John that hes not an artist after all, right after his biggest success. Nice symbolism of having to lose who you are to realize who you should actually be. John does a good job controlling the fact he has no control, and that artistry is not for him. A nice supporting cast, though the brilliance of this simple story is not for everyone. Definitely recommend seeing this, but its story over performance. Next up for Cusack, the 1996 film City Hall.
