Bunchy Carter was an activist, revolutionary and important member of the Black Panther Party. In the early 1960s Carter was a member of the Slauson street gang in Los Angeles. He became a member of the Slauson Renegades, a hard-core inner circle of the gang, and earned the nickname Mayor of the Ghetto. Carter was eventually convicted of armed robbery and was imprisoned in Soledad prison for four years. While incarcerated Carter became influenced by the Nation of Islam and the teachings of Malcolm X, and he converted to Islam. After his release he met Black Panther Party leader, Eldridge Cleaver and joined the Black Panther Party in 1967, he was given the position of Deputy Minister of Defense. In early 1968 Carter formed the Southern California chapter of the Black Panther Party and became a leader in the group. He wanted to transform the 5000 members of his former Slauson gang to become a revolutionary force for the fight towards equality. John Huggins and Bunchy Carter, members of the Black Panther Party, were shot and killed on January 17, 1969 at a Black Student Union Meeting by members of a rival organization called the United Slaves (US) (Maulana Karenga and the US Organization). Their deaths were actual set up by the FBI under its COINTELPRO program. == Through BobbySeale, LLC {Independent Film Production Division} I am raising development funds to produce “SEIZE THE TIME: The Eighth Defendant,” a feature length film dramatization that chronicles my life experiences as the founding Chairman and national organizer of the Black Panther Party and in turn the true history of the Black Panther Party. “SEIZE THE TIME: The Eighth Defendant,” will tell the my true 60’s protest movement history and the true history of the Black Panther Party, giving those now and in the future an awareness of our history, as an example of how one should never give up the struggle for true liberation and freedom.
