Bunge Updates... Sanitary Towels Statement I had a good day in - TopicsExpress

Bunge Updates... Sanitary Towels Statement I had a good day in Parliament today. In the morning session The Chair of the Education, Research and Technology my friend Hon Wanjiru Chege brought a response to my request for a statement on provision of sanitary towels in public primary schools across the County and Nyeri County in particular. The response shocked me...records show that 23,190 girls in Nyeri County have benefited from the programme (Nationally 665,251 girls in class 6 -8)... I need to find some beneficiary students in Nyeri. Five Special Secondary Schools benefited e.g. Tumutumu School for the Deaf, Wandumbi, Allamano Wamagana etc. We are asking as Women Reps and Women Leaders to be enjoined in the programme so that first we can be sure the sanitary towels have been delivered and two help with training on use and thirdly pursue other policy options including consideration of local production of sanitary towels with cotton growing. The statement generated a lot of interest and many Mps including those of the male gender contributed. We agreed with the positive measure of keeping girls in school during those days of the month. There was an interesting perspective that the girls from poor and needy homes also need panties, the Rotarians have projects where they give both sanitary towels and panties. We hope 2014/15 Kshs. 400 million for sanitary rowels will be well spent. We will get a comprehensive report in one month.
