Burger King opened a new Restaurant on the corner of Whalley and - TopicsExpress

Burger King opened a new Restaurant on the corner of Whalley and E. Ramsdell Street in 1970-71? I was the Policeman on the beat at the time. The first week, Management had big problems with the neighborhood kids coming in after school and weekends and harassing the patrons and staff. I was dispatched to investigate the complaints. I suggested hiring an off duty Policeman. Wound up that I was familiar with the neighborhood so I was hired part time for Friday and Saturday nights and other Policeman for during the week. That Friday I arrived at about 7:00 PM and parked my personal vehicle on the side of the building. I walked in the front door and the kids were throwing pickles and catsup at each other. I immediately took a stand and said, lets go outside kids. I took maybe 7 or 8 teenagers outside and read the riot act. I told them my name and why I was now on duty there. I said, you guys are more than welcome to patronize the new Burger King but this nonsense is stopping now, today. If looks could kill, I would be dead. They walked slowly to the rear of the building and toward the projects on E. Ramsdell Street. Looking at my car, one said nice car man, wouldnt look good with busted windows. I stopped the group and said, if one of my windows is broken on my personal car tonight, I will go to your house and break all your windows. One kid answered and said, You dont know where I live man? Yes I do, I responded. You live in the projects and I know your mom. You do? Yes, and Im going to talk to her about your behavior when I see her. I said, Whats your name? He said Jimmie. I shook his hand and said, Im Bob. You look like the leader of this gang. I am, he said. How did you know that? Because you look the toughest. I said, wait a minute Jimmie. I went inside and got 4 FREE Whopper tickets from the Manager and handed them to Jimmie. I said, bring in your mom for a whopper. He handed me back 2 tickets and said. I only need 2. One for me and one for my mom. That really impressed me. I got to meet mom 2 weeks later but remember I told Jimmie I knew his mom? Well, after meeting her and sitting in the booth with them, I said, I thought I knew you? Anyway, after my first day on the job at Burger King, we never had a problem with the kids again. I showed them that the nonsense was over but I also showed them respect and gave them a choice. Come in like punks and you will be thrown out or come in like gentleman and enjoy the new Burger King. Wish I knew Jimmies last name. Bet he turned out to be a productive and successful man.
