‘Burning and Melting’ This romance was written by Nau’i Khabushani, an Iranian employed at the court of Akbar’s son prince Danyal (1581–1614). Danyal had tired of traditional ‘wearisome tales’ and asked instead for something new. This romance proved very popular, especially in Iran. It tells the story of a bridegroom tragically killed on his way to the wedding. His bride-to-be begs Akbar for permission to join him on the funeral pyre. This manuscript is the only known Mughal copy and may even be the original. Suz u gudaz (‘Burning and Melting’) Mughal, 17th century Or. 2839, f.17v
