Burr and Burton students spent 10 days in Morocco, where they visited the largest mosque in Africa (the Hassan II in Casablanca), ate amazing food including snails, camel burgers, and date milkshakes, rode camels into the Sahara and camped overnight, sand-boarded down the dunes, learned Berber and Arabic, learned how to tye a turban like a nomad, hiked the Todras Gorge, and shopped in the souks of Marrakech and bartered like pros. The best part though, was the three days we spent in the High Atlas Mountains, staying at the local sheiks house and doing service in the local schools. BBA students taught English and Art to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders for two days. We were hosted in the project by the first ever sustainable project in the area, the Atlas Cultural Foundation atlasculturalfoundation.org/where-we-work/ . It is a really remote area that just got electricity in the last 10 years. It took us a whole day of travel in 4x4 cars to get there. What a fabulous opportunity!
