Burundi is a relatively small country in East-Central Africa with a population of about 9 million. The major groups, like neighboring Rwanda, are the Hutus and Tutsis, with the Batwa probably the first inhabitants. It was colonized by the Germans and then the Belgians--each of which could easily be called the most brutal and ruthless of Africas colonizers. By all accounts, it is an extremely beautiful country. During my short visit to neighboring Rwanda a few years ago I had a choice of visiting the Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire/Kinshaa) or Burundi and I chose the former. I have been wanting to visit Burundi ever since!
