Business Law students want to express their thanks to Tiffany and Margarita, our hosts at the Justice Education Society, and especially to Justice McEwan for graciously answering our questions with candor and wisdom. As most of our international students come from Civil Code countries, Justice McEwan explained the difference in the role of judges in Common Law countries, the importance of Due Process, the wisdom of juries, and the reassurance provided by the Appeal process. Students were also impressed that the BC Court’s version of the statue of Themis, the ancient Greece Goddess of Justice, carries a scroll in her hand rather than the traditional sword, symbolizing the Canadian approach to justice.
