But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.- Titus 3:9 A great battle that was fought in the early days of the church was legalism. Some tried to attach legal stipulations to the salvation process. This included such things as circumcision. However Paul sought to stop this practice, which would result in great harm to the purity of the salvation experience and to Christian living in general. Likewise we must be on guard against those ideas, beliefs and teachings, which run contrary to the gospel. Therefore I encourage each of you to test those things, which are taught to you against the gospel to see if they measure up and if they do not then reject them. For it is essential to our growth to maintain the purity of Gods word. How do you test the teachings? Compare what is said with the Gospel, and then pray for wisdom and guidance. In so doing you will not only be able to properly evaluate the teaching you receive but you will be able to grow in your knowledge and faith. May God richly bless your day!
