By: Brennan Lim Just watched channel 8 news on transport fees and I find it utterly ridiculous. They interviewed a Poly student who supposedly takes the train and bus to school everyday. They asked her about the concession and her opinions. She said its not worth for her as both train and bus concessions add up to about $100 and she only spends about $50 for transport a month. LETS STOP HERE and look at the about $50 spent a month for transport. ASSUMING that she does not go out on weekends, commuting only to school and back home. ASSUMING 1 month = 4 weeks, and in 1 week she travels ONLY to school and home and does not go out at all on weekends. Therefore only 5 days of traveling twice a day, this means she travels a total of 40 times in a month. So ASSUMING again from the interview she spends $50 a month for 40 trips. This means that 1 of her trips including train AND bus costs ONLY $1.25. WOAH, ONLY $1.25!!! How many of us actually spend only $1.25 for taking the train AND bus in 1 trip. For myself, I spend about $1.97 PER TRIP. Meaning, about $3.94 a day, $19.7 a week (EXCLUDING WEEKENDS), $78.8 a month (EXCLUDING WEEKENDS). So i spend about $78.8 a month ASSUMING that I dont go out on weekends and I ONLY commute to school and back home on weekdays. $110.32 a month (INCLUDING WEEKENDS ASSUMING I SPEND ONLY $3.94 A DAY). Moreover, these calculations are based on a 4 week a month basis, which does not entirely portray the amount of money spent on transport in a month. IMO, really biased news interview. How many % of Poly students does that girl actually represent in terms of paying transport fees? We are after all still students who depend on our parents for our expenses. If youre wondering whats the whole damned point of this post? Its cause I remember seeing an article on how transport fees are going to rise over the next few years and the news showed a clip of Mr. Lui Tuck Yew saying in what seemed to be a MP meeting, that fees are going to rise over the next few years but would still be affordable to the middle and lower class families in Singapore. Sure its still affordable BUT how much stress are we going through as middle and lower class families. Guess thats something that has to be experienced first hand for you to understand that just cos something is affordable and within our limitations, it doesnt mean that it would come easily.
