By Edmund Vazquez Today I want to honor a great Boricua (Puerto Rican) actor unknown by many. Juano Hernández (born July 19, 1896, died on July 17, 1970) was an American theater and film actor of African descent who pioneered African American film industry. He made his debut in the silent film starring the life of General Villa and Oscar Micheauxs film, The Girl from Chicago, which was directed at black audiences. Hernandez also made a series of dramatic roles in major Hollywood films. Their participation in Intruder in the Dust film earned him a Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year. Later in his life he returned to Puerto Rico, where he intended to make a film based on the life of Sixto Escobar.
