By Emily Summars War Veterans Commission addresses center turnover rate Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs Deputy Director Danny Stewart gave a presentation Friday to the Oklahoma War Veterans Commission addressing ODVA centers high turnover rate. Turnover of nurses has been a topic mentioned at several commission meetings and legislative studies. ODVA centers employee 2,170 direct care staff members. Since 2010, turnover has increased in centers from 46.6 percent to 51.7 percent in 2012. Those rates are still below the statewide turnover rate, according to the American Health Care Association, which reported in 2010 was 73.4 percent. Stewart said Oklahoma, as a state, has the third highest direct care staff turnover rate in the nation. “We’re addressing factors leading to turnover and it is being evaluated,” Stewart said, adding one of those items to help is reducing the number of temporary employees. “Every time we don’t retain an employee, it costs one way or the other in training and other items. We will never reduce turnover because we do have an involuntary turnover rate, which is gauged at about 15 percent.”
