If your answer was anything other than ‘the skin’, have I got news for you! Taking care of your skin is an integral part of taking care of your overall health. Apart from using the natural, gentle and effective Neways products to cleanse and moisturise your skin for hygiene and aesthetic reasons (and they are very good reasons!) there’s another step you can take to help you along the path to long term well-being – skin brushing. Skin brushing will assist in the detoxification of your body by enhancing the lymphatic drainage of waste products. The skin’s role in eliminating waste products is so important that in the clinic we often refer to it as ‘the third kidney’. If there is poor elimination of waste products from the skin’s surface additional strain can affect the internal organs increasing the possibility of other health complaints. There are a few simple way that you can help your skin to assist in the role of waste elimination. Firstly wear light clothing, expose the body to as much fresh air as possible, and most important of all, begin skin brushing daily. To do this, simply buy a good vegetable fibre skin brush with reasonably firm bristles. Then each day, before you bathe or shower, dry skin brush. It is most important to emphasise here that skin brushing must only be done on dry skin. Brush over the skin on your entire body. As a general rule the lower torso should be brushed upwards towards the heart and the upper torso should be brushed downwards towards the heart. It is advisable to begin with a gentle action then gradually build up towards a more vigorous brushing. This will help increase the blood circulation to all parts of the body, stimulate the lymphatic system and help the skin to eliminate wastes. You may notice the skin appears flaky and white to begin with, but this is only dead cells and accumulated soap being loosened (or course you won’t get the soap film if you’re using Refresh Bath and Shower Gel!). You will soon notice that with regular daily brushing the skin takes on a healthy colour and texture as well as an overall improvement in the body’s function and general health.
