By: Genea Barnes Over the last couple of years, I have been working on a project that means a lot to me. I have traveled to more than 50 cities seeking out and photographing Ghost Bikes. If you are not familiar, Ghost Bikes are bicycles that have been painted white and locked near an intersection where a cyclist was killed. I ride a bike every day and have had more close calls than I can count, but still, I am one of the lucky ones. One of the things that is so frustrating in this day, is peoples lack of spatial awareness. A Ghost Bike represents the most grievous outcome of someone (cyclists and drivers alike) not being aware of where they are in reference to others. This project is meant to remind people and raise awareness of this growing problem. More and more people are choosing to commute by bicycle, many drivers are frustrated, and most of our roads are not built in a manner to make sharing the road easy to those that are not willing. I know this project can help raise awareness, and hopefully make a difference. Honestly, I really want to be an active participant in making things better. The hope was always to create a book. A manner in which more people could see the art, where more people would be provoked to stop and think. I am finally at that point, and am running a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds for the printing of the book. The book will be hard cover 10x10, high quality printing on high quality paper and 120-150 pages. The book will have two sections. The first section will be the story of my travels finding the Ghost Bikes and small photos of each bike I found. The second section will be the fine art section of the photo pieces I have created.
