By Lynden Carter ‘Mourning’ was born while BF was working hellish overnight shifts. These nights were made barely bearable by oblivion invited by sleeping pills and cheap booze when he eventually made it home in the mornings. During those dark befuzzled night time hours at the hotel desk he would write and write; his autobiographical novel ‘Naked’ and two other books, one nightmare tale of unimaginable horrors, shelved for later editing and another we don’t talk about. After five years he walked away from those nights into another night, that of the dark soul. Painfully healing, he reunited with his family and with himself. He ventured into the world again through Fb. A few months later I read an excerpt from ‘Naked’ on Fb and my interest was most definitely piqued as it had never been piqued before. If I wasn’t a hopeless case then, I certainly was when he let me read the edited version of ‘Mourning’. My Inbox gorged on the excerpts that arrived piece by delicious piece. I even threatened him with smashed ankles when the final instalment did not arrive quickly enough. So last night when he read to an established Open Mic Evening at Spotlight in Lancaster and I watched as the audience slurped up each word and nuance I thrilled, tingled and floated on a high of pride. Then Sarah, the organiser asked him to return and bought a copy. She loved it. Her eyes laughed into mine as BF wrote a whole paragraph of gratitude and love as he signed her book. Ever the Writer! Others in the audience made a point of complimenting him, even quoting lines back to us. After years of pain and darkness the Light is flooding in, and flooding out from my beloved Yank and his beautiful book.
