By Observer-Dispatch September 18. 2014 10:08PM Clinton, Sauquoit Valley no longer perfect Clinton, Sauquoit Valley girls tennis are no longer perfect after splitting matches Thursday in Sauquoit. The winning streaks are over – for both the Clinton Central and Sauquoit Valley girls tennis. Two of the better teams in the area, the Center State Conference schools met Thursday in a regularly schedule league match and for the completion of another at Sauquoit Valley High School. Sauquoit won the make-up match, 3-2 on the strength of Maiah DeGironimo’s straight-set victory at third singles. Clinton’s 3-2 win in the scheduled match also hinged on third singles with Laura Hopkins’ 6-2, 6-4 win over DeGironimo. Sauquoit is 9-1 in league play, 10-1 overall. Clinton is 10-1 in the league, 11-1 overall. “Both teams are very strong and very deep,” Clinton coach Mike Townsend said. “Not many schools in the area has this many kids and can be this competitive. I told the kids on the bus if we could go 1-1, that would be awesome.” DeGironimo defeated Carly Sinclair 6-1, 6-2 to finish off the make-up match. Townsend switched his lineup for the regular match, moving Hopkins, a senior doubles player, to singles. “I knew it would be a close match but tough,” Sauquoit coach Scott Smith said. “I thought we’d have a chance to win against Hopkins.” Smith knew sisters Ella and Tanya Brutsky would likely get wins at first and second singles in the scheduled match – both did in straight sets. The coaches penciled in Clinton as winners in the two doubles matches, leaving third singles as the deciding event and Hopkins’ victory ending Sauquoit’s undefeated season. “It’s not a real problem,” Smith said. “Our focus is on doing well in the CSC (tournament, on Saturday) and in the team and individual sectionals. That’s our goals.”
