By Shawn Ashley Standridge’s emergency contraception bill wins Senate approval A bill that would prohibit so-called morning-after emergency contraception from being provided to someone under the age of 17 without a prescription won the approval Wednesday of the Senate. SB1219, by Sen. Robert Standridge, R-Norman, and Rep. David Derby, R-Owasso, was laid over February 25 after several members noted the bill’s original language prevented only women under 17 form obtaining the drug without a prescription. Sen. Constance Johnson, R-Oklahoma City, for example, noted then that a woman’s husband or boyfriend would be able to obtain the drug for his wife or girlfriend without a prescription. The bill was amended Wednesday to make it general neutral. It provides that Plan B One-Step, or its generic equivalent, also known as the morning-after emergency contraceptive, will not be available to men or women under the age of 17 without a prescription. The bill requires emergency contraceptive to be dispensed by pharmacists to men or women 17 years of age and older without a prescription.
