By U.S. Mission to NATO NATO Secretary General in Kiev for talks with senior government leaders: NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen met with Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko and other senior Ukraine government officials in Kiev on Thursday (7 August 2014), in a visit demonstrating NATO’s strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “Mr President, I can assure you that we stand by Ukraine and your struggle to uphold the fundamental principles on which weve built our free societies,” the Secretary General said. During his meeting with President Poroshenko, the Secretary General was presented with Ukraine’s Order of Liberty, for his personal contribution to the development of NATO-Ukraine relations and support for Ukraine’s sovereignty. In accepting the award, Mr. Fogh Rasmussen conveyed his condolences to families and loved ones who have lost their lives in the struggle for freedom. The Secretary General said NATO appreciates the distinctive partnership it has with Ukraine. “And I look forward to further developing it in coming years. We uphold the principle that each and every nation has the right to decide its own future,” he said. Mr. Fogh Rasmussen also met separately with Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk , Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimlin and the Speaker of the Parliament, Oleksandr Turchinov. The talks focused on NATO’s strengthened support for Ukraine in view of Russia’s aggression and talks to pave the way for a special meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission at the level of heads of state and government at next month’s NATO Summit in Wales.
