By now, Im sure many of you have become familiar with the iconic couple Koleb and Kordale who have taken both mainstream and black, gay social media by storm by introducing us to their lovely family and their lives. Seeing two brothas who love each other is always refreshing to see. But there is something that troubles me with us black gay men, and Im sure some of you know where Im going with this. Im bothered by the fact that black gay love, monogamy, family or whatever...is SO rare in this community that the minute we bear witness to it, it becomes symbolic and the couple becomes iconic. No fault to the couple, as this isnt about them. This goes beyond Kordale and Koleb, and even the infamous Kappa Couple(only one was frat). We see these couples and they become our dream for ourselves. We fawn over the thought of having someone to come home to, cook for, take trips with, make a home with, or even just cuddle with on the couch to watch Netflix. We have these seasonal jumpoff relationships that last from Thanksgiving to Valentines day or PRIDE season. We have those who want a relationship one moment and then want to be free the next. And Im just a little...very bothered by that. Im wondering how many shiny couples are we going to have to admire before we decide to cut the bullshit and just make it happen. I hope noone is offended by this, and if you are, youll be alright. I try NOT to rant about the gay stuff on my wall as much as I used to. Must black gay love and longevity be a lunar eclipse?
