By the Dawns Early Light June 6, 1944 Central Ohio was well represented in the invasion. Dante Guzzo and Don Jakeway of the 82nd Airborne had touched ground in Normandy. Jakeways unit was scattered over 20 miles and Guzzos over forty. Captain Bill Smith Jr., forward observer for the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) had arrived at Omaha Beach at 2:45am aboard a rubber raft, powered by an electric motor and guided in by his driver Wally Sampson. Smith took up position behind a big rock facing the sea and waited. At 6:00am Smith turned on his radio and began communicating with the captain of the USS Arkansas. He would continue spotting for the ship until 1:00pm. George Fink a radio man on the USS Quincy relayed orders from the captain to the men and at 5:30am the guns of the Quincy began pounding the cliffs of the beach. Fink said I know some history books said it was later but I looked at my watch and we were fully engaged at 5:30am throwing everything we had at the beach.
