By the Numbers (For Anita … or anyone else interested) Here is another one of those before and after illustrations. 1) I started by visualizing the image I wanted (the single most important part of the process). 2) I then set the aperture that would garner the maximum depth of field (while still allowing me to use largest possible aperture). This ended up being f/10. NOTE: If youre unaware of how to control depth of field or are not familiar with the term hyper focal distance (or how to take advantage of it) I suggest our Depth of Field workshop. 3) Next, I dialed in my shutter speed and ISO that would render the background the way I wanted. Since I would be limited to my cameras flash sync speed of 1/250 ... I employed a fader to eliminate the excess light these settings created. NOTE: If youre unfamiliar with the power of a fader (variable neutral density filter) I recommend our fader workshop. 4) I then adjusted my contrast, saturation, white balance, tint and sharpening in-camera, based solely on my initial vision (not what I saw with my eyes). NOTE: If youre unfamiliar with the power of the internal settings of your camera, I recommend our In Focus One: Mastering the Mechanics Course. 5) I then rotated my polarizer as to create the best possible colors in my image. NOTE: If youre unfamiliar with the power of the polarizer, I recommend our Polarizer workshop. 6) I then placed my $40 flash in the correct spot as to allow for the removal of glare (as much as was possible) and the creation of some good-looking shadows. NOTE: If youre unfamiliar with the power of the flash and what it offers, I recommend our basic Flash Photography course. 7) I then pressed the shutter button. POW … fun photo; no stress and no after-the-fact adjustments/editing required.
