By the the fourth century the Roman Empire had spit into two parts. The Eastern half had Byzantium as its capital and the Western part had Rome as its capital. Romeos political structure had been in decline for years and in the year 410 the Visigoths over ran Rome its self. Jerusalem had become one of the main and sought after cities in the Byzantium estate, however they let the Temple Mount turn into the cities rubbish heap! Caliph Omar conquered Jerusalem in 638. The Bazantines retreated Northwards seemingly incapable of stopping the Muslim advance, The Muslims considered Jerusalem to be sacred to them since it was within the Temple Mount that their Prophets ascension to heaven took place. When Jerusalem fell and the Muslim army had taken control of the city the army commander Caliph Omer we t to the Temp,e Mount to prey and after he vowed to build a mosque among it the al-aqsa. At the end of the seventh century another Mosque was built on the Temple Mount named the Dome of the Rock. Jerusalem see ed forever out of the hands of the Christian community.
