By the time I started to believe I understood music I had this saying that Ella always made me smile.. but Billie always made me cry... Amy Winehouse was supposed tobe this silly looking Jew girl roaming the London streets after dark looking for someone to have a drink with and one day she just woke up and heard the things it takes the rest of us a lifetime to hear and then... she opened her mouth and tried to tell it to the rest of us... through her song... I get Amy Winehouse. I get her more than i can ever say because in my heart she should have been the Billie Holliday of her generation and instead... the pain, which seems to be the price all truly great artists and poets must pay to be great overwhelmed her and now... she is only a memory of something truly amazing... and special and... I miss her the same way I miss Billie, the way I miss Nell carter... the same way I miss Phyllis Hyman... the same way i miss Whitney... and now quite sadly... Robin...
