Byrum Family 10: Ernest Graves Byrum, Teddy, did love the Lord, although his moto could have been that song, Im only Human. Beulah Hadaway Byrum, Doll, was so different in that she was always so serious. When she was not cooking in the kitchen, she was researching something, or studying the Bible. She always did the crossword puzzle and the jumble word puzzle in the newspaper everyday. She would look up anything that she did not understand. Beulah would read and study her Bible daily and was always in prayer. When you went by the house she was in the kitchen or in her chair head over her Bible praying and studying. I witnessed more than once someone coming to the door to invite her to their church quoting the scriptures. If they were misinterpreted or misquoted, Doll would correct them. This often brought on a debate in which she would bring the poor fellows in the house sit them on the couch, put the family Bible in their hands and verse for verse, quote for quote, she could point out the misinterpretations until they either believed they were misinformed or they ran out wanting to go find their preacher! Every time she did this and I witnessed it, She would tell me, Now Pat, do not ever do this yourself, Just slam the door on them and do not listen. I can do this only after years of studying Gods Word! Never do this unless you know Gods word inside and out!!!! She knew the word! doll also was known to have a direct line to heaven. When she prayed, it was powerful! You could feel God working! Beulah had difficult pregnancies and had 5 children. The first born Johnny Fay was still born, then Sherwood, Ernestine, Harold and John(my Dad). In between, each there were miscarriages. Beulah( Doll) had to do a lot of canning in the summer, but when she started, she wanted to get it done and with four kids, well! Beulah had one of those large pressure cooker canners and at least once every two years (all the kids had stories about this) she would leave come back only to find the canner getting too hot and the pressure going too high. She would run threw the house screaming for everyone to get out and get out just in time to see the lid of the canner blow straight through the roof of the house! Teddy would have to leave the fields to fix the roof while all the kids would have to scrub green beans off the walls! My Dad said it seemed to always happen with the green beans! Doll made most of her clothes on a Singer Treadle sewing machine. I would often sit at her feet and work the treadle! She gave me the Singer when she left this earth but my mother would not allow me to take it. It was given away with all the contents of the house for $25. I begged my mom to let me have it. My mom would just say, You do not want that old thing! It was later when she was older that she realized that she had goofed and was sorry she did not allow me to have it. I offered the gentleman we sold the estate to some big money if he would tell me who had it and I would offer them $2000. for it. The gentleman would not talk to me. I still look for the machine when I go estate sales. Next week.... Byrum debates, I called them the pow wows!!!!
