B’s Blog 4 We are now settled in Rotterdam. There’s just one more training opportunity tomorrow before the games begin. We had a rest day today, from hockey that is, we went for a run this morning to a park for a stretch/yoga type session with our trainer Brad. We started the session on a courtyard but attracted too much attention from the local boy’s school so shifted around the corner to a tennis court. School boys eh, same the world over. After stretching, Kayla and I went down to the local gym for a bit of rehab work. It’s all about keeping the body in balance – I can’t go too long away from a bike to tick my knee over and there isn’t a gym at the hotel unfortunately. Plenty of bikes in Holland though. Ideal transport for a flat little country and they are well catered for in the infrastructure. Cyclists have their own lanes, traffic lights and pathways – we’ve had a few near misses with what I call ‘stealth bikes’, the ones that sneak up from behind and don’t use their bell. So what if we were walking in a bike lane – there was no footpath! A few organised players made their way to Rotterdam central today but I just went for lunch at the local mall. They say it’s a rest day but we are always still busy by the time you do physio, look after any niggling aches, sort washing, find lunch, do scouting meeting, revise notes on our opponents… it’s bed time before you know it. I noticed in the mall the large number of sweets and treats shops here. Yet the people aren’t fat. I don’t get it. I nearly went wayward doing a compulsive swerve into a handmade chocolate shop but after a quick scan of the goods my diet angel stepped in and I managed to get away without making a purchase. My diet angel is that little voice saying ‘don’t do it, this choice will lead to regret, step away from the chocolate’ and for the most part it’s getting really good and steering me clear of treats. Weight management has always been a huge struggle for me. Last summer I took a break from hockey and thanks to the traditional bottle of wine thank you gifts I get from doing school talks, fundraisers and the like, combined with a glorious sunny summer, I had a fairly indulgent off season. The best policy I found is to remove temptation from my little flat. It took all summer to drink all that wine (I don’t have huge amount of people around for dinners and don’t really indulge alone) but I finally did it. Same goes for unhealthy snacks and little treats – there just aren’t any at home. Thank goodness coffee is absolutely fine to indulge in – I’ve really stepped up the quality of coffee at home with help from Danny at Columbus William Pickering. So now my treat is fresh ground beans for top quality trim flat white. Sigh… I miss my home coffee. It’s not the same here.
