C V Vigneswaran, loses patience but stoops to surrender The Sri Lanka Occupied Northern Province chief minister, C V Vigneswarans speech in chennai today delivering the K G Kannabiran memorial lecture organized by PUCL was a surprise in that it ended up addressing just the very concerns voiced by committed human rights activists of the state of Tamil Nadu who have been taking to the streets for years against the Lankan and INdian government on the plight of Eelam Tamils; thus surprising many, but then ended up merely as just another attempt to pacify the anger rather than turning it into his advantage or his constituencys advantage in dealing with a highly recalcitrant state of Sri Lanka, which he accused directly of committing genocide against Tamils. Delivering the k G Kannabiran memorial lecture in memory of noted human rights activist and lawyer who headed the Peoples Union For Civil LIberties (PUCL), Vigneswarans speech which started with a Guru Brahmo, Guru Vishnu invocation in sanskrit raising the shackles of his skeptics, turned the mood in the audience into one of disbelief when he walked the whole length slamming the Sri Lankan government in a packed 37 page lecture in English and in Tamil in which he mentioned R2P, made references to Petrie, the war and the slaughtering of Tamils and also called the post-war Lankan government as operating with impunity and talked of being ruled by a single family, but then just stopped short of taking that shot at that precisely targeted and achievable goal that was right in front of him, in both the addresses. After slamming the Sri Lankan government throughout, Vigneswaran made a remarkable and to some, a predictable turnaround, by keeping faith on the INdian government and urging it fulfil its legal and moral obligations towards Sri Lanka. (It should do so - i.e secure Eelam Tamil people from harassment by Sinhala government and prevent lack of justice, denial of rights) by ensuring that the right of self-determination of the Tamil speaking Peoples of Sri Lanka is realized within a united Sri Lanka. It shoudl do so by ensuring that a proper 13 Plus Plus amendment is introduced into a constitution shed of its unitary character. Though claps ringed for a while after his speech from a section of the very impressed audience, it became apparent at the end of his speech that Vigneswaran had just stooped not to conquer but to surrender. After the claps died, it was obvious that Vigneswaran had surrendered to the Indian government, to the Sri Lankan government of whom he was refreshingly chilling and cutting in his comments, a first by an elected representative, from Eelam speaking daringly in Tamil Nadu. We are yet to see how this pans out in the coming days because despite the fault in placing faith upon the INdian government to move things in Sri Lanka, Vigneswaran gave the strongest testimony of what Eelam Tamils have been constantly calling as a case of physical and structural genocide of the Tamil populace happening currently in the Island, in their homeland. His entire speech is worth a read and I will upload the contents as soon as I can in its entirety in my blog. Its a historical speech neverthless by Vigneswaran.
