CA people will appreciate this conversation I had today with PG&E, our power company. After four phone calls, asking them to confirm that the leaning power pole on our well pump site is our responsibility and not theirs, a supervisor (Pablo) and I had this exchange. Keep in mind that PG&E is currently under indictment for corruption, fraud, a laundry list of charges including having a cozy relationship with our Public Utilities Commission (also under investigation): Me: I am still waiting for an email or a snail mail just saying that the leaning pole is our responsibility and not PG&Es. I need to report that, officially, to our little water company so that we can take needed action on it before the pole falls down and leaves us without water. Pablo: Sorry sir, we cant issue anything in writing stating that, under advice from our legal department. We assume a responsibility by saying that. Me: No, you absolve yourself of any responsibility for the pole by stating that. Pablo: Sorry sir, we just cant do it. Me: What is the name of the CEO of PG&E? Or, is he currently in prison? Pablo: No, he is not in prison ... and Ill look up his name for you. Me: You dont know who the CEO is off the top of your head? Pablo: No, sir. Me: Goodbye, Pablo. For awhile there I thought I was dealing with a government agency. Such incompetence is rarely seen in private industry. But I guess its not all that surprising for a public utility that is in bed with its regulators. Have a nice weekend - I have to think of a way to explain this to my neighbors in our water company. Theyre not going to believe the truth.
