#CAIR-NY Calls for Extension of Zadroga Act to Continue Care for 9/11 First Responders (NEW YORK, N.Y., 9/11/14) -- The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today called on Congress to extend the Zadroga Act, which provides funding for medical care of 9/11 first responders. President Obama signed into law the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 (Zadroga Act) in early 2011. The two programs of the Zadroga Act include The World Trade Center Health Program and The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, and both are set to expire in October 2015 and October 2016, respectively. “With more than 30,000 Americans having an illness or injury caused by the 9/11 attacks and its aftermath, we need to extend the Zadroga Act to ensure the continuation of medical services to their families. As a country, we have to take care of those that did not hesitate to act and aid their fellow American on that most tragic day. Put simply, it is the right thing to do, said CAIR-NY Director of Operations Sadyia Khalique. The least we can do in return, is to ensure that the Zadroga Act is extended to provide necessary care to all surviving 9/11 responders said CAIR-NJ Executive Director Mohamed El Filali. In March of this year, CAIR-NY held the second annual Muslim Day at the Capitol in Albany, where community members met with more than 50 elected officials of the New York State Assembly and Senate, and urged lawmakers to support upcoming bills that directly impact the New York Muslim community.
