***CALLING ALL FANS OF ELIZABETH HAYNES*** With permission from admin, I am holding a small charity book auction on this page. My lovely friend, the author Elizabeth Haynes, has donated a signed, pre-released copy of her latest novel, Behind Closed Doors (not officially out until the end of January) AND an original US hardback signed copy of Into the Darkest Corner. The charity which I am raising money for is Spanish Stray Dogs (SSD) and is one close to my heart and one I have been heavily involved with for a few years now, in many different ways. I will add a link to the charitys page in the comments. Those who are not familiar with SSD, it is a UK-based and registered charity which was set up a few years ago by an English lady in Spain to rescue and rehome, Spanish stray dogs - as it says on the tin! There is no RSPCA in Spain and animals - especially strays- are treated appallingly, something I can attest to as I lived in Spain for 10 years although now live back in the UK. The founder of SSD, Amee Townsend, set up the charity, which is registered with the UKs charity commission, basically off her own back and in conjunction with a local municipal dog pound in a place called Los Barrios, in Southern Spain. Basically, before SSD came about, stray dogs had 10 days after arriving in the pound and if they were not reclaimed or rehomed, they were put to sleep. In some municipal pounds in Spain, not all animals are humanely euthanised. Since SSD was set up, there have been no killings at this pound for the past four years - that is through a great fostering network and also adoption scheme. The dogs can be adopted basically worldwide - Europe, the UK, The States, Canada, Scandanavia and so on...and all the dogs are microchipped, spayed/neutered, come with their jabs, paperwork etc and all homes are checked out prior to adoption. Sick and old dogs are treated and the ones still living at Los Barrios -there are about 200- are housed, fed, walked, cleaned out, vet checked, looked after well, through an amazing network of volunteers. But the things that cost money - food, medication, cleaning products and so on, can only be done through peoples generous donations. If you are wondering why I use the word killings , it is because these council-run pounds, countrywide, are called killing stations. Right.....so why would Elizabeth Haynes donate her books to be auctioned off for SSD? Well, apart from being a lovely person, she actually adopted an SSD dog herself a couple of years ago- the gorgeous writing-shed dog, Bea- and Bea is with her every step of the way when Elizabeth is busy figuring out the plots and twists and turns of her fabulous books. So, the auction for the two books will start at a pound, and the highest bidder at the end of the auction, will win both signed books and the money will go straight back to SSD. Just put your name and amount you would like to bid in the comments of this post. The winner will need to pay directly to SSD via paypal or bank transfer. The auction will begin now and end at 11.59pm on Saturday, January 3rd, 2015. Thank you for reading and for those participating, good luck! :)
