CAME, SAW, & CONQUERED. For the past two days I travelled away in Washington, D.C. for the ROC United RAISE Summit. Basically, a whole bunch of food industry small business owners got together to convene with ROC members to support a fair minimum wage for restaurant workers. Did you know in most states the tip minimum wage is $2.13!?? Its unbelievable. And the statistics that derive from this fact are just as startling and disturbing. We recommend the book Behind The Kitchen Door - By Saru Jayaraman to give you an eye-opening perspective on the shocking lives of restaurant workers who are subject to poverty and abuse because of this arcane standard. So what did we do? Besides getting to meet ROC members from across the nation we did some lobbying in Capitol Hill for the Fair Minimum Wage Act, specifically showing our senators that there is real support from EMPLOYERS to abolish the $2.13 tip minimum wage. It was an AMAZING experience and we felt honored to be invited and stand in unity with ROC and other small business owners to advocate for fair treatment in the restaurant industry.
