CAMPAIGN BEGINS TO OPPOSE GANDHI STATUE IN PARLIAMENT SQUARE London – 9 July 2014 Upon hearing the announcement in India that a statue of Mahatma Gandhi is to be constructed and erected in Parliament Square next year the Sikh Federation (UK) wrote to Culture Secretary, Sajid Javid as he is leading the advisory group to support the project. Bhai Amrik Singh, the Chair of the Sikh Federation (UK), pointed out in his letter that this proposal has come up in the past and was something they successfully opposed in 2008. The Federation has pointed out that in the last few years other evidence from very reliable sources is available why it would be totally inappropriate to have any more statues of Gandhi, especially one erected in Parliament Square. Today the Sikh Federation (UK) has written to Philip Jackson, the British sculptor who created the RAF Bomber Command memorial statues in Green Park, who it has been reported has been approached to begin work on Gandhi’s statue. The Federation has pointed out the well documented darker aspects of Gandhi’s life including his blatant racist views towards blacks, paedophilic tendencies and diehard support for the discriminatory Hindu caste system. The Sikh Federation (UK) is also writing to anti-racists groups, campaign groups opposed to paedophilia and organisations that been working in the UK to have caste discrimination outlawed in the UK. They are being urged to unite to oppose the statue and write to all UK politicians that support their causes highlighting the other side to Gandhi’s life that many choose to turn a blind eye. Bhai Amrik Singh, the Chair of the Sikh Federation (UK), said: ‘Ministers have said they hope the cost of the statue will be met through charitable donations or sponsors. We want anyone who agrees to authorise or build the statue and if it gets the go ahead those who may choose to donate or sponsor it to realise they will be putting a stamp of approval on racism, paedophilia and discrimination. It is our duty alongside others to make them fully aware of Gandhi’s unacceptable views and indiscretions.’ Gurjeet Singh National Press Secretary Sikh Federation (UK)
