CAN YOU HELP? I am a PhD researcher working on a free-to-use IT system that promotes more sustainable forms of agriculture and wider-public knowledge about this. Red Hen Recipes is a recipe website with a difference. By tracing a single ingredient from its place on the farm, the garden, or the shop, through to its cooking and eating Red Hen Recipes aims to rewrite the common recipe to celebrate the different ways in which we get our food. The technology has been built to allow you to login and create a recipe - whether you are a farmer who wants to demonstrate their farming practices and promote your produce, or whether you are a backyard grower with an innovative recipe for that seasons crop. The project aims to promote dialogue and discussion around food and aims to involve different perspectives from different parts of Australia and the food system. This work and the technology is part of my PhD research at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). The site which is already built (but not live) aims to be a place where different views and perspectives on food can be shared and learnt from. The aim of this is to provide a way of thinking about where our food comes from. This research and the site are intended to be non-commercial: no adverts and no cost for use. People who participate in the project will receive a limited edition Red Hen Recipes shopping bag and be invited to a website launch party and showcase. If you or your members would like to participate and help create a recipe about shopping, backyard growing, commercial farming or retailing interests there are several ways you can be part of this: 1) Create a Red Hen Recipe using the website AND complete two short online surveys (15 mins each) OR 2) Create a Red Hen Recipe using the website AND complete one short online survey (15 mins) and two interviews (30 mins each). If you are in Sydney or regional NSW these will be conducted face-to-face at a time and place convenient to you. Tea/coffee and cake will be supplied. If distance is an issue this interview will be conducted by Skype or another similar technology. Anything discussed in the survey or interview will be kept strictly confidential and anonymised. An online version of the final PhD thesis will be made available to all participants at the end of 2015. Support and guidance in using the site will be provided and you can drop-out of the research at any point if you decide its not for you: Your data will not be used and there will be no repercussions for leaving the project. The launch date for the Red Hen Recipe site is set for Friday 28th November, but could happen earlier depending on the number of people who express interest. To register to participate in, what I hope will be a really exciting project and means of promoting different kinds of produce and engagement with agriculture, growing and food, you just need to fill out the registration survey Survey link: surveys.uts.edu.au/index.cfm?surveyid=9105 Password: redhen1
