CAN YOU MAKE A LIVING PLAYING FANTASY SPORTS? Dennis Murphy, a - TopicsExpress

CAN YOU MAKE A LIVING PLAYING FANTASY SPORTS? Dennis Murphy, a sanitation worker from Queens and a huge New York Giants fan, could be a millionaire in a few weeks, all thanks to a fantasy football habit that began this fall with a pretty basic bet. Murphy started playing fantasy football this year on the FanDuel, betting $25. FanDuel is part of a growing subset of fantasy sports: daily fantasy sports. DFS players pick different lineups every day or every week, instead of drafting a single team and hanging onto it for an entire season. Murphy loves that with DFS he wont get stuck with injured players or a losing team week to week. In October, on a $10 bet, Murphy beat nearly 24,000 people to qualify for the FanDuel Fantasy Football Championship. Next month he heads to Las Vegas for a weekend for a shot at $2 million, FanDuels biggest prize ever. Tom Griffiths co-launched FanDuel in 2009. His company, based in New York City, now has 120 employees, close to a million users and some serious cash flow. Griffiths says they collect $15 million to $18 million in entry fees each week and are on track to pay out $500 million in prizes this year. FanDuel makes money collecting about 9 percent in management fees per game. DFS is just a small subset of the massive fantasy sports world, but it is growing fast. Paul Charchian, the president of the Fantasy Sports Trade Association, says more than 41 million Americans and Canadians play fantasy sports. By the end of this year, he expects just over a million will play daily fantasy sports. The rapid growth of DFS is why the NBA, the Knicks, and the Nets have all partnered with FanDuel. Draft Kings--another DFS site based in Boston--has teamed up with Major League Baseball, the NHL, and the Patriots, among others. Charchian says fantasy sports players are so attractive to the sports leagues because they consume roughly double the media of the traditional sports fan. So whats the strategy for success with DFS? Murphy says he doesnt have one, and there isnt a secret to winning. He just has fun.But other players take it much more seriously. Griffiths says theyve heard several stories of guys quitting their jobs as traders and investment bankers, and now make their living betting thousands on fantasy sports every day.
