CAPE TOWN CARNIVAL CAPE TOWN ROAD CLOSURES: SATURDAY, 15 MARCH City gears-up for spectacular carnival City streets are set to explode with colour, floats and dancers when the Cape Town Carnival takes over the Fan Walk on Saturday 15 March. The City of Cape Town will implement road closures and transport plans for the event. Read more below: Another of the Mother City’s annual events, the Cape Town Carnival, will take place this weekend. The Fan Walk will open from 15:00 and be filled with fun, food and carnival goers enjoying more than 2 000 brightly costumed performers, musicians, and spectacular large scale floats. The carnival parade begins at 19:30, and from 22:00 DJ Fresh and international sensation Mi Casa will rock the free after party. The theme for this years parade is Imagine” and pays homage to the City’s title as World Design Capital (WDC) 2014. The carnival is an official WDC 2014 event, as it provides the opportunity for a shared celebration of cultural diversity and expression of creativity. The Cape Town Carnival makes design visible, participative and fun, and inspires people who have first-hand experience of design and creative expression. ‘The carnival is a colourful expression of our diverse communities. It is a celebration of the way in which residents and the City can work and come together to experience and celebrate the cultural diversity of our city,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing, Councillor Grant Pascoe. He encouraged residents to come out in their numbers in support of the carnival and be a part of the celebration. Normal scheduled bus services will be affected by these road closures in the Green Point area as well as the CBD from 14:00. Parking Parking restrictions will be enforced in residential areas adjacent to the Fan Walk from 00:00 (midnight) Friday 14 March, to 01:00 on 16 March 2014. Motorists are advised to obey the signage. On-street parking in the CBD will be available but no additional security will be provided. Parking tariffs will apply until 13:00 when on-street parking becomes free of charge. Free parking is available at the Foreshore and at Culemborg. People living with disabilities Dedicated parking has been allocated at Gallows Hill. Only people with an official disability permit from the City will be allowed to park in this dedicated parking area. MyCiTi Normal services will continue to operate at the non-peak frequency until the last Route T01 bus departs from Waterfront at 01:00 on Sunday, 16 March 2014. The last bus of all Inner City services (except Routes A01, 113 and 108a) and West Coast services (except Routes T03 and 251) will depart subsequent to the arrival of the last T01 bus at Civic Centre Station. The section of Somerset Road between Buitengragt and Granger Bay Boulevard will be closed. As a result, the Routes 108 and 109 (Hout Bay) services will be diverted onto Hans Strijdom Avenue, Helen Suzman Boulevard and Beach Road during the road closure period. The two Hout Bay services will continue as normal from Three Anchor Bay Road onto Sea Point Main Road.
