CAROLYN S. COX, CHAIRMAN CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Military historian and columnist Victor Davis Hanson spoke at the July Western Conservative Conference in Denver. He reminded us that some problems that imploded Rome, excessive leisure and wealth, can be seen right here in America today. More and more people are dependent on a redistributive government that will soon consume itself. It is our duty and our privilege to recognize what an exceptional nation the United States of America is and, for the sake of our children and grandchildren, not to let our country crumble and fall. To accomplish that, we need you. Be sure to challenge anyone who says America is just the same as Italy or Mexico or India. America is not the same and never has been. We are different because of our Constitution, our adherence to the rule of law, our private property rights, and our markets where people can CHOOSE which products to purchase. Barack Obama campaigned on “fundamentally transforming America.” That’s one promise he kept. Elites today extol neither the virtues of fairness, not growth nor the creation of new wealth. They seem more concerned about the salaries some CEOs earn than the huge debt they create. They see America as a financial pie and can’t wait to divide the limited wealth. Obama is not just talking about traditional class envy, but rather something new. Lefties want to appoint an elite technocracy–people like Tim Geitner, Eric Holder and Barack Obama–to direct our lives. Those elite will not be subject to the same ramifications of their ideology that we are, so they can vacation at Martha’s Vineyard and enjoy private health plans. For them the law is flexible and fluid. Obama can give waivers to whomever he likes. He can go after American companies, like Boeing, and give amnesty to 1.7 million illegal aliens because his intentions and goals are supposed to be much better than ours. That’s what being elite means. A country always has enemies, both external and internal, but catastrophe occurs when something changes within. When our people no longer believe that the USA is better than any alternative, no longer believe in personal responsibility, America will collapse from within.
