CAS — a total IT solutions provider — is building a data centre in Kathmandu soon to meet the growing demand for data storage facilities. This is the second commercial data centre that CAS is building in the country after the establishment of the first one in Bhairahawa around three years back. “We took the decision to build a new data centre after the successful operation of the first one,” CAS CEO Mangesh L Shrestha said. CAS’ data centre in Bhairahawa — country’s first commercial data centre — currently has around 15 clients, ranging from banking institutions and international non-government organisations to corporate houses. From this facility, CAS is providing cloud computing services, IT infrastructure management services, and disaster recovery solutions. “When we first built the data centre in Bhairahawa, we were not sure we would be able to rope in this number of customers. But since many companies are now relying on IT to run their businesses, demand for data storage facilities and other managed services is gradually increasing,” said Shrestha. Although CAS is yet to finalise many details on the new data centre, it said the facility will be set up in the Rabi Bhawan area of Kathmandu. It will be spread in around 3,500 sq ft of area, with around 1,000 sq ft allocated for data storage, according to Shrestha. “We have already started talking to Hewlett Packard (HP) to set up the facility and are working on the financing part as well,” he said. To build a world-class data centre, CAS has also entered into a strategic partnership with HP to build cloud infrastructure and provide private, public and hybrid cloud services in the country. Cloud computing, which has taken off quite successfully in many developed and developing countries, is gradually tickling the fancy of many firms here, as companies no longer need to invest huge amounts of money to purchase hardware to set up their own data centres or server rooms. “Yet, there is a need to launch awareness campaigns on it as many still do not know cloud can increase operational efficiency by converting capital expenditure to operating expenditure and allows firms to quickly implement business requirements,” Shrestha said. In this regard, CAS is mulling over reaching out to health and education sectors that generate huge data but are still relying on conventional server rooms to store data.
