CAT-A-TONIC (1hr.42min.39sec.) Sept 2014, multi media including empty room/ animated life form. While many describe it as a happening Calder disagrees the work involves the element of time he states but unlike performance art the viewer does not see the subject. In the work Calder has hidden the cat inside a small wooden room for 1 hr, 42 min. and 39 sec. away from the viewer, Although the viewer senses that the cat is behind the door the viewer is unable to physically see it. Calder believes this dynamic sets up feelings of emotional anxiety between the viewer and the subject that doesnt exist when both are in the same space. He notes that while many artists have evoked emotions from the viewers few if any have evoked emotions form the subject. The piece speaks volumes to the fear and anxiety provoked by hermetic isolation found in interpersonal dynamics of modern society. Calder points out that it has sparked creativity in the subject as during the work the cat has participated in shredding which has not been observed outside the work.
