CAUTION: This is not a joke. On May 4, 2013, Michael and I sold a car for $1. We completed the Transfer of Ownership and the Release of Liability/Ownership form. We sent the Release of Liability/Ownership form to DMV immediately and never gave any more thought to the transaction. TODAY, we received a bill from a towing company for the car for $2,937. I called DMV (waited on hold for 2 hours). The car is still registered in our names. They have a record of the Release of Liability/Ownership, but the new owner never registered the car. We can still be held liable for anything having to do with the car until the new owner pays the fees and registers it. This includes accidents!!!!! We can show proof that we sold the car, but it will be up to a judge to decide whether or not we will be held responsible. DMV said it is the SELLERs responsibility to ensure the BUYER registers the car. They said most sellers meet the buyer at DMV to ensure the paperwork is complete. I cannot believe this. The towing fees increase $50 a day. This was the first and only notification we have received. The towing company can legally go after us for the balance. The DMV has a copy of the Release of Liability/Ownership. It doesnt really release the seller from much of anything though. They are sending us a copy.
