CBC will be holding their Sounds of the Season benefit for food - TopicsExpress

CBC will be holding their Sounds of the Season benefit for food banks in Toronto on Friday. I completely support their efforts and would encourage others to support this important initiative. That said. I have something to say to one of the people who have recorded a promo for the event. Dear Premier Wynne, Some may think it laudable that you are promoting a benefit for food banks. Some might say that it is very progressive of you to recognize that there are people, indeed thousands of children (more than half of food bank users are children) are going hungry in Ontario. For those who are impressed with your commitment to this issue I would point out... You are literally the ONLY person in Ontario, as the leader of a majority government, who actually has the power to end hunger. There are a myriad of policy tools at your disposal. The most obvious being increases to income supports for Ontarios poorest. Beyond the obvious, you could increase and improve social housing, increase minimum wage, improve access to education and training, and have greater accountability for corporate tax incentives tied to job creation. There might even be agricultural policies that could increase access and reduce costs of healthy nutritious foods for people who couldnt otherwise afford it. Premier Wynne - food banks were only ever meant to be a stop gap. While they are unfortunately still necessary because without them children and their families and seniors will go hungry, food banks shouldnt be necessary. You shouldnt be doing promotions for a charity fix to this problem. You have the power to permanently fix it. You claimed to be a progressive when you ran. Prove it.
