CDR NARAYAN KULKARNIS write up encouraged me to write my experience with naval hospital INHS ASVINI. My wifes niece was staying at Bombay with her husband when I was posted at Bombay(those days Mumbai was called Bombay). She is like a daughter to both me and. My wife. One day when I returned from office , I saw my niece with her husband were at my house. She had very high fever and blisters all over her body. She was not able to talk properly. Her husband ( a high ranking RBI officer now) said they tried most of the known hospital in Mumbai and she did not got cured , as a last resort at my nieces insistence came to us. I knew she was not entitled for treatment in a naval hospital being a civilian. But seeing her condition, I did not have any option but to take her to ASVINI by my old scooter. It was around 1830 hrs and I took her to the Duty Medical Officer. I told him frankly that my niece was anon entitled person for getting treatment being a civilian.Seeing her condition he agreed to give initial treatment and after that I was advised to take her to some other hospital. I agreed and gave an undertaking to that effect. Immediate treatment started . Then the DMO advised me to speak to the commanding officer of ASVINI and request him to admit her as special case. I was a Lt Commander and was hesitant to speak to a senior officer of the rank of Rear Admiral. However, I mustered courage and called up the admiral and told him the condition of my niece. He listened to my request and asked me to hand over the phone to the DMO who explained the delicate condition of the patient. The Admiral instructed the DMO to admit her in ICU immediately. My niece was in the hospital for the next 7 days and got cured fully. When I wanted to clear the bill for my non entitled nieces medical bill, I was surprised to see the bill. It was only Rs 700/- for 7 days admission charges including the medicine charges. That was my pleasant experience with a service hospital. My niece and her husband ( now a very senior officer of RBI ) still remembers the incident. I am proud of our service hospitals.
